What is a Podiatrist?

hiking-along-trailFoot pain is not something you have to live with. Many people walk around for weeks, months or even years before they realize that the pain they are having is not normal. It is estimated that the average person walks 115,000 miles in their lifetime. It's no surprise then, that 75% of Americans will seek podiatric care in their lifetime.

A podiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of all foot and some ankle disorders. After completing college, the podiatric physician/surgeon spends six years learning the breadth and depth of all the complexities of the human foot. The training and scope of practice encompasses the related systems and structures of the foot and lower leg including the neurological, circulatory, skin and musculoskeletal systems.

You may want to see a podiatrist if you have experienced problems similar to any of the following:

  • Heel pain or arch pain
  • Excessive buildup of dead skin causing callus or corn formation
  • Burning, tingling, numbness or pain in the ball of the foot
  • Bump on the inside or on top of the big toe joint causing pain with walking or shoe gear
  • Pain in shoes due to an abnormal bump or swelling of the foot or ankle
  • Ingrown or abnormal looking toenails
  • Sports injuries
  • Plantar warts
  • Tired feet
